Abstract: Many chronic inflammatory diseases including CKD are characterised by loss of muscle or cachexia. Cachexia is multifactor syndrome characterised by severe (up to 75%) skeletal muscle wasting, muscle wasting leads to decrease mobility and quality of life and increase the mortality rate. While chronic inflammation can cause cachexia, loss of skeletal muscle can also contribute to inflammation. Skeletal muscle cells can produce anti-inflammatory cytokines.
