Role of Materials Engineering in Protective Armors Payman Suhbat Ahmed Department of Manufacturing Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Koya University http://koyauniversity.org Abstract: Multi-layer armor systems are used widely for many military and civil applications, for example, in lightweight ships, vehicles, airplane protection or body armors. In the past, the armors were typically rigid and made of high-strength metallic plates. However, over the recent few decades, there has been observed a tendency to apply armors providing maximum ballistic protection at minimum weight. Among many original concepts of ballistic protection systems, there should be distinguished multilayer lightweight armors that seems to be the most perspective ones.
