Activities

On 30 March 2020, participated as a speaker in the Online International Workshop on ((Re) Contextualizing Contested Heritage: Building Capacity & Designing Participatory Approaches to Preserve Cultural Heritage by the Youth) which is an activity of the Research England Funding to Develop Participatory Approaches to Preserve Contested Heritage by Youth. The workshop is organized by the University of Leeds (UK), Wasit University (Kut-Iraq), and the University of Technology (Baghdad-Iraq). My presentation entitled (Saving Koya Old Town Heritage: Students, Professionals & Heritage) was about the experience of documenting Koya Old Town Heritage by students through her Conservation and Rehabilitation Class and how it becomes a good base for further professional architectural heritage survey for Koya Old Town. 

Participated as a councillor. in the EAHN Business Meeting and Research Poster Session both held in the Department of Architecture and Industrial Design at Università degli studi della Campania Luigi Vanvitelli in Aversa/ Naples in Italy on 24 January 2020 followed by a tour program in Caserta Royal Palace on 25 January 2020.



Chaired the thesis examination committee for the master thesis entitled (Sustainability in the Interior Design of the Modern Kurdish House) by the student (Lava Sherzad Muhammed) from the
Department of Plastic Arts in the College of Fine Arts at Salahaddin University in Erbil on 26 December 2019.The thesis has handled a topic associated with architecture along with interior design; it has examined 85 residential units in Kurdistan Region in regards to certain sustainability criteria.


An excursion to Amedi's Gate of Mosul and Historical Madrasa of Qubahan for the fifth stage took place on 23 November 2019 as part of their Conservation & Rehabilitation Class under my supervision with my colleague Ms. Manar Nazar. The main purpose of the visit was to make a survey for the zone of Amedi's Mosul Gate and teach the students how to deal with this significant feature. The students have done a measure work and provided design proposals on how to improve tourism in this zone.


HCRP hosted a seminar about (Urbilum: The Assyrian Empire) by Ms. Lanah Haddad, a young Iraqi archaeologist to talk about her innovative project URBILUM the modern strategy board game that has won a grant from the German Goethe Institute. http://feng.koyauniversity.org/news-and-events/news-2020-03-07


An excursion to Lalish temple for the fifth stage took place on 21 October 2019 as part of their Conservation & Rehabilitation Class under my supervision with my colleague Ms. Manar Nazar. As the director of the HCRP, I've organized with the Department of Antiquities of Koya and the ASK project team an International Workshop on the preparation of rehabilitation measure in the old town of Koya that took place on 6-7 October 2019. On 6 October a closed session took place, then on 7 October the public session was held at the Faculty of Engineering and addressed mainly the local citizens and authorities of Koya. http://feng.koyauniversity.org/news-and-events/news-2019-10-01



Participated as a trainee in the (Causes of Decay and Preservation of Building Architectural Heritage) training course  which was held by the Iraqi Institute for the Conservation of Antiquities and Heritage in collaboration with the Czech National Heritage Institute and GEMA ART International s.r.o. in Erbil. http://feng.koyauniversity.org/news-and-events/news-2020-03-02 


As the director of the Heritage Conservation Research Program-HCRP, I've represented Koya University in the ongoing project of the Heritage Survey of Koya Old Town which is a joint project with both the Department of Antiquities of Koya and the Archaeological Survey  of Koya- ASK project team. The project is one of the outputs of the architectural closed session that was held in KRC2019 conference and been launched in April 2019.


Participated as a member of the scientific committee and organization committee of the International Conference of "Koya on the Road of Civilization-KRC2019" which was held at Koya University on 1-3 April 2019. I was also a speaker and chaired the closed architectural session in the conference about saving the heritage of Koya Old Town.



Have become a Councillor in the European Architectural History Network-EAHN since the EAHN business meeting in Zaragoza-Spain February 2019.


Joined the Italian Academy for Advanced Studies in America at Columbia University in the City of New York as an Associate Research Fellow/Weinberg Fellow  for the Fall Semester of 2018-2019. 


Participated in 2017 SAH Annual Conference as a speaker for my paper "Memory and the Question of Style in Iraq", and joined the sessions and tours to Glasgow and Edinburgh important architectural and landscape features. Glasgow, UK; June, 2017.


Organized with Prof. Jorge Correia an International joint workshop between Koya University and the University of Minho, on the Challenges of Architectural and Urban Heritage: Research and Practice at Koya Univerity on 27 April 2017.


The visit of Professor Jorge Correia from the University of Minho in Portugal to Koya University for a month during April/May 2017 within ERASMUS MUNDUS/MARHABA program activities.
During that month Prof. Correia had participated in teaching the Architectural Design IV class for the 4th stage students, we had then a significant scientific excursion to Duhok, Acre and Amade within the class activities.


Participated in 2016 SAH Annual Conference as an awardee of 2016 SAH-Getty International Program Grant, and joined the sessions and tours to Pasadena's and South California's important architectural and landscape features. Pasadena- Los Angeles, Ca. USA; April, 2016.


Our Current Challenge for the 4th Year Students.. Designing a Camp of 300 Refugees in Koya City.. The study of this project started in February 2016.
An Excursion was a part of this study to regular and irregular Refugees Camps in Koya and Erbil.. This excursion included also a visit to Erbil Citadel and Al-Mudhafariya Minaret in Erbil.

Participated as a speaker in the International Symposium on Urban Development: Koya as a Case Study, in Koya on December16-18. 2013, as I presented my paper "Koya City Urban Conservation: Challenges and Potentials".






Participated in writing the Self-Assessment Report-SAR for the Faculty of Engineering at Koya University, and in its discussion in Erbil on June 20.2012 in a workshop on Assessment for Quality Improvement of Engineering programs which is one of the activities of "Rehabilitation of Iraq Higher Education System".



Won a 3-month scholarship in the Brandenburg University of Technology (b.tu) in Germany by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) (Dec.2009-Feb.2010).  



Participated in the workshop of "Urban Development of Baghdad and Useful Cooperation between the University of Baghdad and German Univercities" (December 2009- February 2010)


Participated in the preparation of the international conference of "Urban Development of Baghdad  and Further Cities in Iraq" on February 5-9.2010, where I had also a participated as a speaker with my paper "An-Najaf Urban Development of Historical Districts", as well as in the poster session of the same conference.
